ABOUT OUR CLUB

Furnitureland Hub indicates that Bradley Payne's award was "presented by High Point Police Officer Jim O'Connor, who encouraged Furnitureland Rotary to adopt this project." I suspect this was the first such award to a student from Fairview Elementary School. (Phil Morris)

Shirlee Carda Fairview Scholarship

Before her passing in 2003, Shirlee Carda inspired the club to embrace the Fairview Elementary School Scholarship. It has become one of the signature programs of the Rotary Club of Furnitureland.

Program Goal: To recognize and reward graduating fifth graders at Fairview Elementary. Recognition is based on scholarship and citizenship during the candidates' fifth grade school year. Rewards are designed to improve the recipients' chances for a successful transition to middle school, and will be in the form of school supplies and clothing for use in their first year in middle school.

Program Description: Eight students will be selected for scholarships in May, prior to the end of the academic year.

Students eligible for a scholarship will have been recognized during the academic year as either a Rotary Student of the Month or a Kiwanis Terrific Kid. Additionally, students must be in good standing and still enrolled at Fairview, and scheduled to be promoted to sixth grade with their class.

Scholarship recipients will be selected by a blind draw. Each student's name will be written on a slip of paper. If the student was both a Student of the Month and a Terrific Kid, they will have two slips of paper. Names will be drawn out until five (or the number of scholarship recipients for that year) individuals have been chosen.

Award Scholarship winners, with their teachers and other school personnel will be invited to a Furnitureland Rotary Club lunch meeting. At that meeting, they will be introduced to the Club, and will receive backpacks with school supplies. Shortly after that meeting, the winners will be taken shopping for clothes appropriate for wear to school. The students will be accompanied by a representative of the school, and sufficient Rotarians to provide one-to-one supervision and guidance in the shopping process.
